September 2020
Particularly during a year like 2020, the importance of checking in on each other, and asking people “R U OK?” has a whole new level of significance. However what happens when you ask the question and you get more than a “yeah I’m alright.” Perhaps you get a “Nah, actually I’m not okay.” What do we do then?
First up – high five to you for asking the question!
If for you, the idea of asking the question R U OK? makes you feel uncomfortable – don’t worry you are certainly not alone. Everyone is experiencing vastly different and personalised realities right now, including you. Now more than ever though, is the time we need to be creating these social connections and reaching out to others.
At times, people can be worried to initially ask a question like this, in the fear of the response they may receive. The most powerful thing you can do if someone wants to share with you is simply listen. You don’t even need to say anything! The simple act of listening can be incredibly powerful. Having a few resources or ideas of how else you can help can be a great help for both you and the person you are asking, and that is where this years R U OK? campaign is to assist you. After listening, you can encourage action and check in or follow up with the person.
We know that a conversation could change, or even save, a life. If you are the person facing the question – I encourage you to be brave and answer honestly. Not doing ok? That’s ok. Now more than ever it is absolutely ok to not be ok – reach out. There are supports available to you.
